Birdcare intern at Monterey Bay Aquarium will perform duties under the supervision of the Husbandry Operations Aviculture team. During the time period of the program, He/she will be working on a research project that will be presented upon the completion of the internship.

Monterey Bay Aquarium is a non-profit aquarium opened in October 1984. It is based in Monterey, California. The aquarium has a mission of inspiring conservation of the ocean. With over 35,000 creatures representing over 550 species, it is one of the most popular aquariums of the United States.

Eligibility Requirements:

All candidates are asked to fulfill all the given requirements:

  • At least 18 years of age
  • Must be a current student at an accredited college or university, or graduated during the term immediately preceding the internship
  • Must submit a cover letter and resume of relevant coursework and/or experience related to the position applying for
  • Must provide a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation from college/university professors or faculty staff
  • Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0
  • Schedule requirements include a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week with total cumulative hours not to exceed 540 for the duration of the internship
  • Proof of current tetanus vaccination
  • Able to lift and carry up to 40lbs.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently and efficiently with minimal supervision
  • Tolerant of wet and dirty environments and able to work in cold water temperatures (~52F) for extended periods at a time
  • Able to follow written and verbal instructions
  • Able to work comfortably around potentially unpredictable animals in a frequently-changing environment
  • Strong interest in working with birds
  • Strong attention to detail and situational awareness
  • Able to maintain objectivity while working in potentially emotional or stressful animal care situations.
