Job: Trails As Parks Summer Intern

The Summer Intern works under the direct supervision of Trails as Parks’ Assistant Superintendent and program manager. The intern candidate will also work with additional staff to perform duties, operational tasks and at times, must have the ability to work independently. The preferred candidate will have a friendly disposition with a “can do attitude,” and must be willing to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
This is a high- visibility, public-oriented position. Polite communication skills and willingness to interact with the general public and volunteers on an informal and formal basis are essential traits. The intern will be expected to assist with and also lead interpretive programming for the public.
OVERVIEW OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Alert to public safety and work hazards at all times.
Develops and leads interpretive environmental education programs across a variety of disciplines (including but not limited to geocaching, local flora and fauna, stargazing, birding, soils, reptiles & amphibians, and water quality) with guidance from senior staff.
Assists senior staff with public archery instruction, fishing clinics, and canoe trips.
Loads and unloads canoes from trailer and assists the public with safe launching.
Maintains animal ambassador enclosure tank and feeding schedule.
Safely conducts canoe training courses for youth with senior staff instruction.
Enforces park rules and regulations.
Interacts directly and works with staff, interns, trades crews and a variety of volunteers when available and assigned for projects and programs.
Assists staff in organizing volunteer days to manually remove vegetative invasive plants along the Spring Creek Greenway Trail.
Informs park visitors of upcoming Trails as Parks programs, assists in outreach events, and photographing programs.
Performs park janitorial services in buildings and restrooms.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Must be 18 years or older; and
Enrolled in college/university working towards a degree in Biology, Natural Resource Interpretation, Environmental Education, Wildlife Biology or related field.
Good knowledge of local flora and fauna.
Willing to work both indoors and outdoors.
Computer literacy, competency using MS Word, Excel and social media.
Must have reliable transportation to and from work.
Amenable to flexible work hours.

While performing the duties of this job, the intern will work in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; moving mechanical parts outside weather conditions; extreme heat; and night-time shifts for evening programming. The noise level in the work environment is normally moderate.
While conducting public programming, appropriate attire should be worn. This will consist of an intern- specific shirt and appearance should be neat and acceptable for public presentation.

Valid Texas driver’s license with a good driving record is preferred.
