Your Role and Responsibilities
This is for a 2024 summer internship with the following start dates: May – August or June – September for quarter system schools.
The Tech for Justice group at IBM Research is leading a focused research agenda to drive innovations that address systemic biases and social inequities. We are seeking highly motivated students with a background in computer science, artificial intelligence, applied mathematics or equivalent areas. Candidates currently enrolled in graduate programs are encouraged to apply.
This internship aims to contribute to our ongoing research work that investigates new socio-technical approaches for aligning existing Large Language Models with social values.
The ideal candidate for this role will have previous experience training and evaluating machine learning models. In this role, the intern will conduct analyses of a portfolio of models’ robustness, techniques for instructing and controlling models, and potentially build out benchmarking tools. The intern will work directly with our research team to adapt our analysis pipelines to achieve the best improvements in our models. Demonstrated communication skills and the ability to work independently, as well as in a team, are highly desired traits. We are ultimately seeking an intern who is motivated by addressing responsible natural language technology development and use and is committed to interdisciplinary engagement and collaboration.
Required Technical and Professional Expertise
- Applicants with Natural Language Processing (NLP) background.
- Proven or strong desire to examine and advance large language models (LLMs) with an interest in or focus on inclusion in their studies and experiences.
- Strong foundations in statistics and machine learning.
- Comfort working with the Python ecosystem and popular ML libraries and tools (e.g. PyTorch, sklearn, numpy, matplotlib).
- Familiarity with the latest LLMs APIs.
- Strong problem-solving and reasoning skills.
- Strong communication Skills.
- Ideal applicants are also effective collaborators and enjoy working side-by-side with people of all backgrounds and disciplines.
Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise
- Knowledge of reinforcement learning in the context of LLMs.
- Experience in working as part of a research and development team.
- Familiarity with important social science concepts pertaining to issues of tech inclusivity, fairness, and ethics.
