Strategy and Business Development Intern Summer 2024

The D. E. Shaw group seeks motivated, intellectually curious students from all academic disciplines to join us in one of our strategy and business development (SBD) groups during our summer internship program. You‡ll spend your summer in either the COO Group, Corporate Development, External Communications, or Investor Relations. In each of these groups, you‡ll collaborate with a diverse and talented team of colleagues on challenging, high-impact projects central to some of the most important questions and opportunities we‡re thinking about as a firm. This role offers the chance to be part of an inclusive and collegial working environment.

What you‡ll do day-to-day

You‡ll take on projects that require rigorous analytical thinking and creative problem-solving. You might investigate which markets our investment strategies should target for expansion, evaluate whether and where to open a new office, research prospective new investors for our funds, or develop a plan for launching an opportunistic credit fund.

Throughout the summer, you‡ll work closely with your manager and other mentors who will support your professional development. You‡ll participate in our robust, customized learning curriculum, which is designed to help you strengthen your skills, learn new ones, and build a strong foundational knowledge of our firm and industry. You‡ll also have regular opportunities to learn about us and our industry from internal and external experts, get to know employees across the firm, and enjoy events and outings like volunteer days, Broadway musicals, and intern game nights.

Who we‡re looking for

Most importantly, and in keeping with our firm‡s culture, we‡re more interested in curiosity, entrepreneurship, and initiative than we are in any particular skill or experience.
We‡re interested in highly accomplished students with keen analytical aptitude. Strategy and business development interns excel at taking a structured and detailed approach to solving problems, communicate effectively (verbally and in writing), take initiative lead organizations, and thrive on collaboration.
You‡re not expected to have previous finance experience, but it‡s great if you do. We‡ll help you learn everything you need to know, both through our training program and through hands-on experience working with your manager and colleagues. Recent SBD interns majored in fields such as economics, history, international relations, mathematics, and computer science, and we welcome and encourage applications from individuals from all academic disciplines. Students in this program are usually approaching their final year of full-time study.

The expected monthly base salary for this position is $10,000. Our compensation package includes travel to the internship, overtime for all hours worked over 40 per week, a sign-on bonus, and a choice of corporate housing or a summer housing allowance.

At the D. E. Shaw group, we believe the diversity of our employees is core to our strength and success. We are committed to supporting our people in work and in life, which is why we offer benefits such as a family planning and surrogacy program and a charitable gift match to all full-time employees.

Additionally, our staff-led affinity groups are pillars of our community, helping to celebrate diversity, promote leadership and development opportunities, and facilitate inclusive mentorship. Members and allies organize a wide range of educational and social programming, from expert talks to film festivals.
The members of the D. E. Shaw group do not discriminate in employment matters on the basis of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity, pregnancy, national origin, age, military service eligibility, veteran status, sexual orientation, marital status, disability, caregiver status, or any other category protected by law. We are committed to the principles of diversity, equity, and inclusion, and are eager to hear from individuals having a wide range of backgrounds and personal characteristics.

The applicable annual base salary or hourly rate paid to a successful applicant will be determined based on multiple factors, including without limitation the nature and extent of prior experience and educational background.
